At the beginning of 2003, my husband
Larry and I decided that we wanted to adopt a cat.
Fortunately, Larry insisted that we do our 'homework' before
choosing a new cat. So, he bought me a book called The
Giant Book of the Cat which provides
general information and some details about most of the cat breeds available in
Britain. This is where we first discovered the amazing Bengal
cat breed.
In April 2003, we brought home
our first Bengal cat, Rogue, bred by Connie Henderson of
Zawadi Bengals. Following Rogue's adoption, we
subsequently adopted Furrari - our second Zawadi Bengal. Furrari
came home with us at the end of May 2003. Anyway, Larry
and I are completely smitten with our Bengals and are 'hooked'
on Bengal cats for life. |

Our Bengal cats are totally
different from any other cat we've owned. The sounds they
make, their 'c'attitudes, their fun-loving natures, their
insatiable curiosity, their devotion to us, their affectionate
natures all make our Bengal cats extra special.
The Bengal's Voice
Rogue, our
F5 Bengal boy, trills, chirps, 'barks' and gurgles when he wants to
'talk' to us. He is very 'chatty' as well-- if we tell him "No",
he is always quick to answer back with a sharp "Nyuh".
Furrari, on the other hand, is a late generation
SBT Bengal and sounds more like a traditional cat although she too
trills and chirps in addition to growling like a bulldog puppy
if Rogue is teasing her!
The Bengal Attitude
The Bengal
attitude? I'll start by saying they have LOADS of
purrsonality! They are happy, social, very intelligent,
inquisitive, athletic and are generally full of beans with a
healthy dose of mischievousness. Our Bengals are
incredibly friendly, interactive and extremely affectionate with
us. Rogue and Furrari greet visitors to our home warmly
and are quick to investigate handbags, umbrellas, coats and the
like. Bengals enjoy climbing and exploring high places, some
like taking baths with their owners, riding on shoulders,
walking on leads and playing with their toys.
Bengals need plenty
of mental stimulation due to their high intelligence, so we
provide ours with kitty video tapes, interactive toys and play
mice which they like to hide in Larry's left shoe-
they always choose the left for some reason. For
additional stimulation, I use
clicker training with my Bengals and they love it.
They learn new tricks so quickly-- it really is amazing.
Rogue &
Furrari follow us from room to room in the house coming up for
cuddles often. In the evening while we are relaxing and
watching TV, they both tend to come up and sit on our laps.
Rogue actually sits and watches TV with us! If there is a
nature programme on, Rogue is always there watching intently.
Rogue's favourite movie is the animated film, 'Ice Age'-- he
adores the character 'Scrat'.
Our Bengals are
always providing us with entertaining antics that keep us
amused. I think that they are the clowns of the cat world
and I couldn't imagine life without them. |
